Key West Inshore & Backcountry Fishing Report

Captain Ryan Carter – August 26, 2025

Fishing charters around Key West has been firing on all cylinders lately, especially in the inshore and backcountry waters. We’ve been seeing some excellent action across the board, with consistent bites and great variety for anglers of all experience levels.

Snook have been showing up strong along the mangrove edges and channel cuts, particularly during the early morning and late evening tides. Live pilchards and soft plastics have been getting solid results, and we’ve had several quality fish in the 25–30″ range this past week.

Tarpon are still hanging around, especially in the deeper basins and channels. While the larger migratory fish have mostly moved on, the resident juveniles (10–40 lbs) have been very active. Early morning Hogys have been the ticket, with some exciting aerial displays.

Mangrove Snapper fishing has been outstanding — perfect for dinner at Hurricane Hole Marina. These fish have been stacked up in the potholes and around structure. Chumming with pilchards and using light tackle with small live baits or chunks has been deadly. Most fish are in the 12–16″ range, with some bigger ones mixed in.

Shark fishing has been red hot, especially on the flats and around the edges of the backcountry. Lemon sharks, blacktips, and a few bulls have been crushing fresh bait. It’s been a great option for those looking for a serious pull and some adrenaline-packed action.

With the water temps warm and bait plentiful, it’s a great time to be on the water. Whether you’re targeting gamefish or just looking for a fun, action-packed day on the flats, now’s the time to get out here.

Tight lines,

Capt. Ryan Carter
